Onitsha—Youths under the aegis of Anambra State Association of Town
Unions yesterday urged governor Willie Obiano to quickly put machinery
in motion for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
Speaking with Vanguard, the leader of the group, Mr. Osita Ozalagba said the conduct of council poll would enable the people of Anambra State enjoy full blast democracy particularly the rural dwellers.
“The governor inherited elected council chairmen and councillors from his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi and it would be preposterous for him to relapse in the old order by using transition committee chairmen and councillors”.
Ozalagba said the 1999 constitution as amended guarantees there shall be elected local government chairmen and councilors at the third tier of government to deliver democracy dividends to the people at the grassroots.
According to Ozalagba, the conduct of council polls would provide the youths the opportunity to be involved in the act of governance.
While praising the governor for empowering the youths especially in the area of agriculture, he appealed for more empowerment of the youths in that area as it would make them to be self reliant.
“The governor, while boosting security in the state that would attract investors, should also liaise with donor agencies for the state to benefit from their largese.”
He further called on the governor to restructure the ministry of youths and appoint a youth to head it because he understands the problems of the youths.
